*Full Band Show

As Nashville-based band Dallas Ugly gears up to record their second album with Grammy-award winner Justin Ryan Francis (Madison Cunningham, John R. Miller, Orville Peck), they have settled into a sound that is equal parts playful and mature. Their 2022 debut album, Watch Me Learn, was described by critics as “full of shimmering magic” (Under the Radar Magazine), “as unique as it is dreamy” (Glide Magazine), and “a record that deserves a lyric sheet” (Nashville Scene). Those elements have persisted, deepened even, but with two more years of experience writing and performing together, the seeds that Eli Broxham, Libby Weitnauer, and Owen Burton planted in 2021 have flourished into a lush garden of sound. On the upcoming release of their singles, “Big Signs” and “Born Crying”, the trio digs in their heels and commits to the beauty in their collective quirk.

~About Matthew McAllister and Julia Kwolyk

Julia Kwolyk started on classical violin at a young age, and participated in various ensembles and orchestras growing up. She went on to study violin and voice in college, serving as the concert mistress of the Connecticut College Orchestra and later earning a B.A. in Vocal Performance from Furman University. Growing up in Boston and returning in her 20s allowed her to engage in the rich Celtic and jazz music scenes by attending fiddle camps and singing with a jazz ensemble at the New England Conservatory of Music. She studied operatic repertoire in Vienna, Austria, and has collaborated with dancers, composers, and independent filmmakers on various projects both as a singer and violinist. Improv fiddle has become her staple since moving to Charlottesville in 2012. She has teamed up with local songwriters to go on regional tours and perform at Celtic and Americana music festivals. Julia is also a teacher at The Front Porch and a member of the local folk band Rare Bird Alert.

Folk singer/songwriter Matthew McAllister has been involved in several music projects in Charlottesville over the last few years. Though no longer touring, he has recently shared the stage with local artists such as Spudnik and Nan Macmillan, and has occasionally been seen playing in the local pub, Durty Nelly's. Matthew has been writing since age 13, and gigged along the East Coast regularly from 2013-2018. He structures his vulnerable lyrically-based songs around mental health, nature, life on the road, the loss of friendship, and finding peace in chaos. He pulls influences not only from folk, but also musicals and old-time hymns. Matthew is currently working on an EP that is set to be released in 2024.

Julia and Matthew met 10 years ago busking on the Charlottesville Downtown Mall, and have been writing and playing folk music together ever since.
