Virginia artist, Dana Masters, gathers inspiration from every aspect of her life to create her delicate yet playful Silhouette Jewelry. Come meet her at the gallery during the Historic Downtown Mall’s First Friday celebration on September 6, from 5-7pm.
Dana’s designs are inspired by the observation of life around her, family and friends, and a couple of terrific cats! To create each piece of her On A Whim Silhouette Jewelry, she first cuts the basic shapes out of anodized aluminum or brass sheets. Masters designs the silhouettes and makes a pattern that she places on a metal piece. Using a jeweler’s saw and a very fine blade, she carefully saws out the silhouettes, then either layers the shapes with the cut-out pieces on top and rivets all the layers together or allows each layer to move separately for a different effect. Sometimes she lets the little silhouettes stand alone, creating a delicate pendant. Beads, chain, or ear wires are then added to finish each piece. Recently, Dana has added a cutting machine as a tool which is used to create little greeting cards and engraved magnets.
Dana started her business “On A Whim” in 1987 and it has evolved over the years from hand painted greeting cards to pewter tooth fairy boxes and ornaments to present day Silhouette Jewelry. "Working on the Silhouettes has been great fun. I get great satisfaction as each new silhouette emerges from the metal. I love the whole process of designing, making, and selling my work and meeting and talking with customers.”
