As our featured artist for the month of October, Kirsten Lynch will share her vibrant and functional batik fiber work. Come meet the artist at her opening show on Friday, October 3rd from 5-8pm during the Historic Downtown Mall’s First Friday event.
“Batiks, with their bold colors and unique designs, have always grabbed my attention. I started out making simple quilt blocks, but it wasn’t long before I got hooked on turning these amazing textiles into things you can actually use. For me, batiks are more than just fabric—they’re a way to bring a little art into everyday life.” says Kirsten.
She finds joy in choosing the fabric for each piece, whether she’s designing something purely decorative or crafting items to be used and loved every day — batiks transformed into vibrant table runners for family gatherings, whimsical microwave bowl holders and potholders brightening up kitchens, and sturdy tote bags that will turn heads at the market. “I’ve learned that creativity flourishes when you allow yourself to play, to follow intuition, and to embrace the unexpected turns that each project can take.”
Kirsten grew up in Charlottesville (Go Black Knights!) but after graduating from UVA, moved away to follow her career in systems development and raise a family. Now that her daughters are grown and starting their own families, she’s excited to be back in Charlottesville for her second career as a fiber artist.
Kirsten is available for custom work using your color palette, please contact her at kirsten@shendandoahthreadworks.com.
